Rossendale Road Trip

The cyclo-cross season continues with no rest and, at the weekend, a small group of select Rossendale riders took the long journey South to take part in the 4th round of the National Trophy series at Torbay, Devon and were rewarded with some excellent results. In the Female event, Helmshore’s Elsie Haygarth scored possibly the best result of her career, coming home in 10th place overall, gaining valuable UCI ranking points. And just one place back, was Iona Simcock, riding for Ramsbottom’s JMC club.

And it turned out to be real family event, with their respective fathers racing in the Open V50 race, with Phil Simcock taking his first victory of the year over Dave Haygarth, with both riders making it to a top 10 placing, Simcock 7th and Haygarth 10th.

In the North West league the 8th round took place on Sunday at the Cheshire Showground, Tabley, and local interest was in the Open V60 category where Mick Taylor was the leading Rossendale rider in 8th place overall. Adrian Watts bounced back from his poor result the previous week with an excellent ride to 10th spot, with Derek Schofield struggling in the wet and greasy conditions and, with a puncture as he started his last lap, dropped to 15th at the finish. Graham Wright still appears to be suffering from the effects of ‘long covid’ and battled through to 20th.

There is a break from the league this weekend with the North of England championships taking place at Hetton Country Park, Sunderland.
