CX Season in Full Swing
Autumn has arrived and this marks the start of the cyclo-cross season, and Rossendale Cycling Club are now hosting evening training sessions aimed at giving young riders a taste of the sport with qualified coaches providing tips and advice. The sessions run fortnightly at Marl Pits (top car park) on Wednesday evenings under floodlights from 7-8:30pm, the next session being on 1st October. The sessions are open to all ages and abilities, novice or experienced, with a r4equest for U18s to be accompanied by an adult. The sessions are free for league members and juniors, with non-league seniors charged £5. All are welcome and emphasis is on having fun in a safe environment off road.
in the North West league, the 2nd round was hosted by North Cheshire Clarion at Wythenshawe Park on Sunday, and mo9st riders were pleased to find the circuit had held up well after the previous day's heavy rains. In the Youth's event, Rossendale Harrier Charlie Dobson finished a creditable 18th from the 35 starters in his first ever 'cross' race, and he will do well if he follows this sport.
Ramsbottom's Phil Simcock and Helmshore's Dave Haygarth continued their battle from the 2024/25 season with a close contest, Simcock eventually taking the lead to finish ahead by 20 seconds, in 3rd place overall.
Mike Taylor had his best ever start in the Open V60 race and held his p[ace throughout to take a well-earned 9th spot in a strong field. Adrian Watts used his technical skills well on the many cambered climbs to 15th, with Derek Schofield 17th and 1st V70. Graham Wright took 26th and Pete Browning completed the Rossendale squad in 28th.
Tottington 's Kate Taylor, riding for the 360 Cycling club took a fine 12th spot overall in the Senior Women's race, with Jacqui Simcock 16th and 1st Lady V55.
The event was great warm-up for all those taking part in the International 3 Peaks cyclo-cross this weekend, full report next week.
